In coal beneficiation, magnetite is utilised in dense media circuits as a very fine powder that is mixed with water to generate a Heavy Media Slurry with a higher specific gravity than water alone. Separation is achieved between mineral particles with a specific gravity less than the slurry's specific gravity, which float, and those mineral particles with a specific gravity greater than the slurry, which sink.
