Harmonized System of Nomenclature (HSN) is a multipurpose international product nomenclature which is developed by the World Customs Organization (WCO). HSN is used to classify goods from across World in a systematic and logical manner which brings in a uniform classification of goods to facilitates international trade.
The HSN structure have 21 sections, with 99 Chapters and about 1,244 headings and 5,224 subheadings.
Every Section is divided into Chapters and every Chapter is divided into Headings and every Heading is then further divided into Sub Headings.
Section and Chapters are used to describe broad categories of goods while headings and subheadings are used to describe goods in detail.

HSN Code in India
India is a member of World Customs Organization (WCO) since 1971 and was originally using 6 digit HSN codes for classification of commodities but later Customs and Central Excise of India added two more digits to make it 8 digit classification.
Is HSN Code Mandatory?
It is compulsory to mention 8 digits of HSN code in case of export and imports without that the export benefits shall not accrue.
